Art Deco Horror

This drawing combines two of my favorite things: H.P. Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos, and 1920's fashion art.

I first discovered the works of H.P. Lovecraft at a game shop that I used to visit when I roughly 16. I saw a box set of Call of Cthulhu, and was fascinated by it. Eventually I saved up enough money to buy it, and once I realized the game was based on a series of stories I set out to buy up anything Lovecraft I could find. Now I have a not inconsiderable collection of anthologies, and more recently the collection of The Dark Worlds of H.P. Lovecraft audio books ready by Wayne June. I've come to think of him as the "voice" of the Cthulhu Mythos. His voice is amazing and it fits the mood and atmosphere of the books so perfectly. I can't recommend them enough. In that same line, I thoroughly enjoy the Dark Adventure Radio Theater audio dramatizations made by the H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society. Those guys are truly amazing!

Scones for the Dead - The Mistress

So I've decided to officially go ahead with making a web comic based on a flash-fiction piece I wrote some time ago. I was originally thinking that I would write more flash fiction pieces set in that world, but then decided to work it into my plan to draw more. I've always admired artists/writers who produce web comics (even the so-so ones) because I know just how hard it is to make and keep rolling.

So here's the main character, known up to now simply as, The Mistress. This is very early concept work. In fact, it's the first sketches I've done of her. I like the face, but I need to work on the body. It's all just too plain right now. I need to study up on cartoony art.

Tombstone Jig

I tried to do some kind of elaborate scenery in the background, but each attempt seemed to draw away from the figure and her trance-like floaty state. Eventually, I'm hoping my mind will start to fill in the gaps in my drawings and make my ideas fit. I finally decided to call it done and ink it. Though I could still add a background later should I finally have a creative epiphany.

Pen and ink on paper. I drew and erased so many ideas on this drawing that the paper itself is totally ruined. I had designs of putting it in the art show at Norwescon (most fans have their convention, Norwescon is mine), but it really is damaged to the point of not being worthy to sell. Perhaps when I get a background settled for it I can re-ink the whole piece into a cleaner copy.

Lady Cowperthwaite

This is an older piece, a portrait of my character from our very long running GURPS Steampunk campaign. The game takes place in the early have of 1870's, London.

Pen and ink on paper.

I spread out a number of the Dover fashion plate books and made a dress based on a few different designs. Many of those plates can be found online here.

10 Minute Portrait offer

As a tool to help me get better at drawing, I offer quick and simplistic portrait drawings to those who email me a photograph of themselves. I will decide on a style and draw you as such. Could be in anime style, or Disney animation style, or like the illustrators from the 1920's. It could be anything. You don't get to choose. That's the catch. Plus, there are no deadlines I'm keeping to, so your drawing could be posted that evening, or sometime next week. Consider it a fire and forget type of thing.
